How to drift your car: Brake to transfer some weight to the front of the car and flick the steering to initiate the drift. Maintain the drift by lifting off the throttle to reduce drift angle and add more throttle to increase it.

To sustain the drift you need to keep the power on to keep the rear wheels spinning – about 80% throttle is the rule of thumb (although you'll need less in slippery or low traction conditions). If the back comes round too far, gently ease off the throttle and apply additional steering lock to correct the slide.

The trick to drifting is that players will want to be on the outside edge of a turn and begin slowing down a little bit when they make their approach. As soon as the player enters the turn they will want to pull their emergency brake and swing their car around the turn.

There is not a 'drift button' in Dirt that will allow players to master the gameplay and drift instantly. Instead, players need to treat their cars as if they are real, following traditional drifting rules. For that reason, the process of drifting can be complicated for beginners in Dirt 5.

Deflating the tires a bit increases their surface area and allows them to get better traction. Remember to reinflate the tires before you drive away. Rocking the vehicle forward and backward can also increase traction. Ensure the front wheels are pointing straight and the vehicle is in its lowest gear.

The art of drifting is achieved by taking a rear wheel drive (RWD) car and pushing it into oversteer; achieved by using the handbrake and clutch, and the throttle. When you push the vehicle into oversteer, the traction on the rear wheels break and then move out of line.

Drifting is a balance between oversteer and understeer. Too much throttle can lead to oversteering and the car spins out. On the other hand, turning the steering to begin without sufficient throttle results in understeer. An excess of any of the two can put the car in an unwanted state of motion.

In general, if you're just sliding around and don't hit anything, your risk of damaging your car goes down drastically. One that not a lot of people think of, at least for first-time drifters, is to not keep the throttle pinned. Rarely are drifters all the way on the throttle for extended periods of time.
